Sponsored by ResMed, this project is dedicated to enhancing the treatment experience for sleep apnea patients worldwide. Over the course of four months, in collaboration with ResMed’s founders and the Australian team, we worked to shift the brand’s image from a traditionally clinical product to a positive, lifestyle-enhancing solution. This transformation helps ResMed stand out in an increasingly competitive market.
"Sooth," redefines sleep apnea care by integrating meditation and mindfulness into the experience. By prioritizing sensory comfort and promoting better sleep, Sooth aims to improve overall health and well-being.

What is Sleep Apnea?
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It affects about 1 in 15 adults in the U.S. There are three types: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA), and complex sleep apnea. Symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Risk factors include obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure. Diagnosis is typically through a sleep study. Treatments include lifestyle changes, CPAP machines, oral appliances, and sometimes surgery. Effective treatment improves sleep quality and reduces risks of heart disease and diabetes.

People and Themselves
After completing our foundational research and studies, we decided to investigate three key dimensions—people and space environment, people and family, and people and self—to identify potential design breakthroughs for the future CPAP machine.
When people suffer from this type of physiological illness, the relationship between people and space becomes very subtle. We think of space in terms of sound, light, temperature, and smell. What kind of effects will these have on people suffering from this condition? What kind of living environment do people with sleep apnea need? What kind of living environment allows them to sleep well? What types of sounds are helpful for this group of people? Can sound therapy help people relax?

CPAP User‘s Interview
CPAP User‘s Interview
In exploring the context of people and family, we conducted an in-depth interview with a father to gain comprehensive insight into his personal experience with using a CPAP machine. We delved into his daily usage routine, examining how this medical device integrates into his life and affects his interactions and relationships within the family. We specifically focused on understanding the impact on family dynamics, particularly with his partner and children.
Throughout the interview, we also explored his usage habits, emotional experiences related to using the CPAP machine, and how he manages his sleep apnea. Additionally, we discussed how these factors influence his overall daily routine, aiming to capture a holistic view of his experience.

Based on what we know about the CPAP User. We found out that many users have difficulty adjusting to get used to the CPAP mask and breathing issues with the machine. We take inspiration from the meditation process and incorporate sounds to help them practice breathing patterns and encourage them to keep using the mask for better improve their sleep quality. And also, this process can reduce their anxiety and facilitate relief.
